19 Opportunities for advancement offered by the courts attracted ambitious outsiders whose arrivals in town heightened an increasingly bureaucratic atmosphere. Traditional (or "sword") nobles, administrative (or "robe") nobles, and a very important group with characteristics of both all congregated in Aix. They participated in municipal and royal government, dominated the surrounding countryside, and lived on the rents and revenues of scattered properties, judicial offices, and various other investments.
