In a recent apologia for Lons, Roderick Watt argues that the lycanthropy connotation was exclusive, and that Lons's Der Wehnvolf was not a source of inspiration for the partisans of 1944-5. Watt's evidence is orthographic: he clearly shows that the Nazi regime favoured the spelling 'Werwolf - suggesting lycanthropes - over the Lonsian 'Wehrwolf,' and to this detail he attaches much weight. However, considering the wide familiarity of Germans with Lon's novel, this thesis is hard to swallow, particularly since sources in 1944-5 - the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung for one - specifically referred to Lons's 'peasant chronicle,' although they changed 14 Werwolf!

Unfortunately for the Nazis, the SS-Police official assigned to this post was General Hans Priitzmann, a charter member of the SS aristocracy whose undeniable wit and intelligence were more than offset by his vast conceit and notable lack of attention to business. 26 A native of East Prussia, Priitzmann, a handsome man, had celebrated his forty-third birthday shortly before his posting. Like several other senior SS leaders, his most notable physical characteristic was a facial scar suffered during a sword duel.

56 Thus, there was a conceivable base for Werwolf efforts,57 and it is no surprise that unsettling 'incidents' occurred occasionally. 59 This town was one of the few areas where the SS-Werwolf played an important role in the fighting, not only as a result of the diversionary effect of its operations, but also because Bad Kreuznach was a key road junction, where the Americans required good order so that they could push armoured units through to the Rhine and cut off the attempted withdrawal of the German Seventh and First armies.
