Cholera was caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, and people were infected when they drank water contaminated with the bacterium. Cholera bacteria passed into the drinking water when fecal discharge from cholera-infected people was spread by poor sanitation and mixed with water supplies. Many microbiologists considered the case closed. But a great puzzle remained. Cholera epidemics waxed and waned, raging some years, then disappearing for decades or centuries at a time.
