You have a split second to make decisions upon which lives depend. There exists the very real possibility of getting injured. Or killed. Tonight it is more than adrenaline, however. Tonight I am crazy with fright. Fright that Tronstad will go into the fire without me and end up maimed. Fright that people will die because of my absence, that Sears will hound me out of the department. Fright that I will become the department laughingstock. Sears is a no-nonsense, by-the-book officer who does not tolerate screwups, and this is the pièce de résistance of screwups.

Nobody is laughing except Tronstad; but then, Tronstad is the kind of guy who would tell dirty jokes at his own mother’s funeral— and did. I can’t help noticing Holmes, the fire investigator, talking to Lieutenant Sears across the yard. After a while, Chief Abbott joins their enclave and all three steal looks at me. Five minutes later Lieutenant Sears approaches and kneels in front of me, touching my knees with both his hands. Sears worships the fire department and everything it stands for, knows the operating guidelines like the inside of his pockets, and is one of the most personable people I’ve run across.

Tronstad had the night watch and would be ratholed for hours in front of the television. I could most likely get away with this. In college I’d walked in on my roommate while he and a girl he picked up at a party were humping; she’d had the same listless look in her eyes Iola Pederson had right now. Tronstad called it the doggy-fuck look, because it was what you saw on a couple of rutting dogs, the look you’d see in your own eyes if you were to look at yourself in the mirror during sex. As compliant as a schoolboy, I let her unbuckle my pants and pull my shorts down, burying me in her face.
