When 90-95% of the fully expanded, current leaves were removed, mean height growth was 61, 32 and 48% of controls when defoliation occurred in spring, early summer, and midsummer, respectively. Seventy-five to 80% leaf removal had less impactthe greatest growth depression (30%) occurred after spring defoliation and the least (9%) after midsummer defoliation. Three serial defoliations of 30% in spring, late spring, early summer had no growth impact.
