On the streets of the city, column after column, especially the supply units, pressed toward the southern and western exits. The vehicles of these rear-echelon services were loaded with beds, furniture, bottles and foodstuffs from the city’s abandoned storehouses. Sitting atop the vehicles were women and children, auxiliaries released by the German posts. Once Kharkov had been the metropolis of the rear zone with cinemas, cafes, soldiers homes and other entertainment spots. Now it had become a front-line city, changed its face.

I can still see the crew of one gun, on a narrow street which led to the cemetery to the right of the road, which literal­ ly held out to the last man, until he too lost his life to a direct hit. The clear winter night was brightly lit. Our winter clothing no longer gave any protection against the snow. Every movement could be seen from a dis­ tance. Our company’s platoon leaders tried desperately to hold together and assemble their people. At the comer of a house in the centre of the city, I and four men of my platoon, which was now reduced to the strength of a rifle squad, ran into Lt.

This was roughly the situation when, on 15 February 1943, Armee-Abteilung Lanz and the sector as far as Belgorod were placed under the command of Army Group South. The result was the cre­ ation of rigid command structure at a decisive point in the crisis of those weeks. The creation of Armee-Abteilung Lanz was a result of the situation on this front.
