Not only couldn’t he turn his ship around, the captain had no ship-to-shore communications to let George Fred’s parents know where he was. If he encountered a ship heading toward New Bedford, he could send a note back with it. Otherwise, he had to wait until they stopped at their next port to post a letter to them, which might take weeks or even months to arrive. Instead of bawling out George Fred, the captain proved to be quite lenient. He informed the boy that everyone works on a whaling ship.

And because a whaling ship could operate fairly efficiently as long as it set out with a few skilled whalemen, many of the common sailors were indeed uneducated and unskilled. Few of them were out-and-out criminals, troublemakers, or no-accounts, however. No captain would tolerate such a person for long. So why did a number of boys have such a low opinion of their fellow crew members? These boys all came on board with some deeply ingrained prejudices. In addition to feeling that he was the only true Christian on his ship, Enoch Cloud was also displeased with the national composition of the crew.

Frank Bullen was another story altogether. Most of his sailing time had been aboard sleek and majestic clipper ships. He found everything about whaling—from the crew to the officers to the ship itself—inferior to his past experiences and, thus, beneath him. Pages from the log of the John P. West, 1885. Drawings of whales indicate that a whale had been killed; numbers above the head record the amount of oil gotten. Whenever another ship was encountered, a drawing of it was also entered. None of these boys were mean-spirited or bad.
