They wanted nuts, of course, and when Hitler went into the garden he always took some with him. Once when the supply was exhausted I 41 offered to go back to the Reich Chancellory and get some more, but Hitler refused: ‘No, Baur. ’ And with that he shouted and a servant came running up. Whilst the former residence of Hindenburg was being prepared for him, Hitler lived in the Hotel ‘Kaiserhof’, the place he had always stayed at when he was in Berlin before he came to power. I was quartered there too.

I knew that right in the middle of the field was the great girder mast used for anchoring the Zeppelin, and there was a real danger that I would collide with it. But I was going down rapidly now and there was nothing I could do but hope for the best. The airfield was pitch dark, and not even obstacles and hindrances were lit up. I landed only a few yards from that anchor mast . . My second election flight for Hitler ended with Fürth, Nuremberg and Munich. After a couple of months’ flying on the Munich – Venice – Rome and the Munich – Berlin and Munich – Zürich – Vienna routes I was once again called on to fly Hitler on an election tour.

The weather was clear when we flew over the Alps, and it was now Hitler’s turn to be impressed. 00 sharp, but we were five minutes early, and although we could see that Mussolini was already waiting down below, Hitler ordered me to fly around over the town for five minutes. ‘We’re due to land at midday,’ he said. ’ I therefore flew around over Venice for five minutes, whilst Hitler admired the famous town from the air. Then we turned back to the airfield and landed – ‘on the dot’. As far as I could judge, the greeting between the two statesmen was sincerely warm and friendly.
