Between World War I and World War II, in other words, the body lag increased from six to ten years to twenty-five years. Yet there are still so many bodies and barbarities left unaccounted for from World War II. This absence has surfaced recently in examinations of how the muteness of the fathers of baby boomers about their experiences during the war relates to widespread incest and child abuse. Their silence was no doubt produced by the generally censorious climate established by McCarthyism and cushioned by suburban sprawl, but it was also transported onto the next generation, where accounts of this displaced violence have only recently surfaced.
Yet doesn't this mean that the cure would consist of forgetting Vietnam: would that have helped us get over the Vietnam syndrome? In other words, how can a cure depend upon uncomplicated forgetting-unless it issued from a Nietzschean injunction which our sorry-assed political body would be in capable of assimilating? Even this would require some understanding of what it was we were supposed to forget. The problem is that the Vietnam syndrome is not about the grief we might feel about the dead, or the guilt we might acknowledge for having destroyed a culture; the Vietnam syndrome is not even about the non-closure of the war, though its duration was wearing on the American attention span.
There was one vet, in fact, who was in a psychiatric hospital, although he had never been to Vietnam itself; he had been a photo and film archivist at the Department of Defense. He once told another vet, "You may have participated in this or that atrocity, but I saw them all. And it drove me crazy. " I grew up in a military town where, during high school in the late 1 960s, I saw numerous snapshots of necromutilation, of Vietcong beheaded with their cocks coming out their mouths, brought back by the older broth ers of students.
