India was an enriching experience in many ways for Forster. He was introduced to the charismatic Maharajah of the engagingly surreal state of Dewas Senior (one half of an already small rajput principality divided by a family feud). Forster and the Maharajah were charmed by each other, and Forster returned after the war to act as the Maharajah’s private secretary. On each visit he wrote a series of acute and amusing letters back to his friends and family, which were later to form the core of The Hill of Devi (1953).

But his life-writing practice expresses a hope that people can be known through love. Because they are complex, such knowledge will vary from person to person, and be partial, and be autobiographical. Or at least, as a novelist he knows that being in love makes people feel they are in touch with reality, in harmony with the universe. Such a gesture seeks to unite biography and autobiography too, then; to transform the biographer towards the condition of his subject and bring to birth in him the creative impulse.

On the contrary, like many in our own era of negation and terror, he felt it necessary to protect civil liberties against the totalitarianising forces of wartime. In the celebrated essay ‘What I Believe’ he wrote bravely (it was 1939): ‘if I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend I hope I should have the guts to betray my country’ (TCD, p. 66). Though the Second World War made the public journalistic self more active, it confirmed the novelist’s end. With the death of his mother in 1945 he was further devastated.
