Their paleontological correlation, as well as their absolute chronology, still remain problematic, since this time span lies out of the range of C-14 dating. Concerning the environmental conditions of the hunters-gatherers, this time span is highly important, since it provided favorable life conditions: easily penetrable landscape, where steppes alternated with open woodland of taiga and temporarily even of a warmer character, which extended into the submontane belt. A relatively luxuriant vegetation with species-rich biocenoses covered the valley floors, where eutrophic wetlands were often found.
This loess deposition was interrupted by climatic oscillations which were moister and more balanced, but not warmer. Interpleniglacial intervals, which could be correlated with such oscillations as, for instance, Hengelo, have not been identified more precisely in this area of Moravia so far (Lozek, 1980a). By contrast, the interval represented by the soils of PK I corresponds, without doubt, to the Stillfried B in Austria, 1 which can be correlated with the interstadials of Arcy and Maisieres in France or of Denekamp in North Europe.
The Elster glaciation sensu lato can be subdivided into two phases: the older Opava and the younger Kravafe glaciations. The first one did not obviously penetrate as far as the Odra Gate (tributary of the Moravian Gate), but its meltwaters were drained by the Becva River to the Danube. Deposits of the Kravare glaciation occur both in the Odra Gate and in the foothills of the Beskydy Mountains. Both glaciation phases were probably separated by a marked warm oscillation. The following Saale glaciation can also be subdivided into two phases: the Palhanec and the Oldhsov glaciations.
