If we consider the multiplicity of tasks the average ROV operator is required to undertake in the pursuit of his work and add to this the concerns ofthe oil company's safety organization, it is easy to reach the conclusion that safety must be the highest priority and this is why the Code of Practice restricts itself to highlighting areas of concern rather than stamping an authoritarian message. It may be mooted that the Code of Practice should have had more bite in its recommendations but, as highlighted in the introduction, it is not designed to remove the absolute need for the ROV contractor's vigilance to safety.

It has been suggested that a review of the way in which this has been achieved by the airline operators could be of benefit. All parties concerned should continue to seek for further areas of improvement, and it is hoped that the current NPD/industry strategical discussions will be of considerable assistance. Detailed discussion will also continue on future requirements for deep diving, standardization of fittings for and recovery of, hyperbaric rescue vehicles (HRV s) and approval of dynamically positioned diving support vessels (DPSV s).

While this is a far-reaching activity affecting the industry as a whole, work has been progressing at a lower level and specific areas of interest to subsea service operations, as follows: NIFO Deep Diving Standards; DPDSV checklist advice on hyperbaric rescue AODC Training standards electrical safety IMO Diving systems CONCLUSIONS Given the correct application of standardization, cost savings should be achievable in the longer term, but further effort will be required to develop confidence in common standards and certification processes for equipment, vessels and personnel.
