Biologically, the immune system of today centers around the behavior of a class of cells called lymphocytes, which have the ability to recognize and respond to complex molecular shapes. These shapes are called antigens and the structures by which lymphocytes recognize them are called receptors. For example, antibodies are a form of receptor used by the immune system to recognize and respond to antigens in a particular way. The cells and molecules of our bodies can also behave as antigens, as can be demonstrated by transferring them to another person in a graft and observing graft rejection.
