In traditional light field rendering as well as light field DRR generation, the generated image is a skewed perspective image. However, where in traditional light field rendering the image plane remains fixed between the scene and the focal plane, in DRR generation the virtual image plane remains fixed while the effective image plane can move and lies on the other side of the scene from the focal plane.
