Ranzinger Physik-Department, Technische Universittit MUnchen 0-8046 Garching, West Germany ABSTRACT Procedures for increasing the lifetime of carbon stripper foils are described. Four to eight ~g/cm2 self supporting carbon foils were treated by two different methods in order to change their amorphous composition into a more crystalline structure.
Carbon film deposition under heated substrate conditions appears to be different from the cold substrate growth and results in longer foil lifetimes. 3. Carbon films prepared by cracking ethylene appear to have a different structure and one that is more resistant to radiation induced shrinkage than vacuum deposited films. The combination of the hot substrate or ethylene cracking techniques with the foil slackening method may produce films with an even greater practical lifetime. It is now possible to use in the terminal of accelerators, carbon films with acceptable lifetimes for very heavy ion beams such as copper, bromine and iodine.
