Yeats’s conWdence in English was not shared by all his Irish successors. Thomas Kinsella (b. 1928) felt that ‘An Irish poet has access to the English poetic heritage through his use of the English language, but he is unlikely to feel at home in it, or so I Wnd in my own case’ (Deane 1991: 1313). Other problems that recur in postcolonial poetry found focus in Yeats’s life and writings: the national culture he celebrated was a product of his imagination as much as it was a legacy from the Irish past.
