I could see his clear profile with its straight nose that came out at an angle from a towering forehead. The skin of his face was thick and ruddy seen through the down of a golden beard. His eyelashes were long and chestnut coloured, flat at the roots as they swept upward over smoke-gray, clouded eyes.

This had reference, I understand, to the fact that he was to be the manager of the first cinema in Dublin, the 'Volta' in Henry Street' 8 The next and last time I met Joyce was in his flat in Paris in the year 1928, when he had become world-famous. Everything in Joyce's rooms spelt 'Dublin'. There were pictures and sketches of old Dublin on the walls and even the design of the large rug, with which the floor was carpeted, portrayed the corkscrew course of the River Liffey. He was delighted to meet me again, and his queries were all concerning the Dublin that he knew and loved.

It had run out of geniuses. Joyce, as great a genius as any save Yeats himself, applied in person to Lady Gregory. I was waiting outside some place at which she was staying - I think that it was in Molesworth Street. Joyce was not in long. Presently he appeared, full of gravity, an assumption of seriousness he kept for occasions when shot full of the slings and arrows. Gravely he inclined his head. ' Thus we lived in privacy and profanity. I could take it easy on the roof, for I shunned work; Joyce could remain downstairs forever reading and rereading his 'Contra Gentiles', an early essay against everybody.
