Thus, Friedrich V's desire to nurture and protect Protestantism in Bohemia and his wish to be king there proved to be destructive to both. Just as important, the Bohemians' strong will to preserve their religious freedom ultimately clashed with their equally strong attachment to political autonomy and helped to bring both to an end. In the beginning, to be sure, resistance to the forceful imposition of an unwanted religion went hand in hand with opposition to the Habsburg attempt to construct a more powerful and centralized regime which would severely reduce or eliminate the cherished autonomy of each city, diet, province and faith.

But the enormously important thing at stake in this case was not the elevation of the position of the monarch relative to other traditional sources of public authority: it was the survival of the dynasty itself. The merest glance at the political map of Germany in this period shows clearly what could, and in fact very nearly did, happen to the various provinces which comprised the Habsburg patrimony: a breakout to a political autonomy not much if at all less complete than that which characterized the Landeshoheit enjoyed by the other territories of the Empire.

As a sincere Catholic, however and one who furthermore believed that the Bohemian rebellion and the acceptance of the Bohemian crown by Friedrich represented a usurpation of legitimate authority and a serious breach of the imperial constitution, it was perhaps easier for him to reconcile his motives than it was for Johann Georg, who to be sure had many of the same constitutional objections to Friedrich's actions, but whose attitude on this point was traceable more to fear for himself than to principle.
