Although George Eliot’s sympathy lies clearly on the side of the Tryanites, the story is by no means an apology for Evangelicalism: the narrator makes it clear that ‘the movement, like all other religious “revivals”, had a mixed effect’ (319), and there is no suggestion that Mr Tryan’s theological doctrines are in themselves superior to those preached by the traditionalist old curate Mr Crewe or the successive Dissenting ministers in charge of the Independent Salem chapel.
