And then I left. I don't remember Rainer and I ever acting together in anything. All I remember is meeting with a group at a coffee shop now and then. He once said he didn't like Capricorns. I am a Capricorn, so I took it as another proof that he didn't like me. I always felt this mixture of attraction and warning not to get too close lest I be burned. I felt I had to keep a certain distance. I thought he might become dangerous if I gave in to him body and soul. How do you mean "dangerous"? He would drive you into a corner and not let you go.

Then why not break out of that safety zone? When Rainer entered the room, everyone stood at attention. People with masochistic tendencies became so hysterical that he could squeeze them dry. The rest kept their distance. Whenever Rainer appeared, I actually found it hard to be myself. I was tense, hoping he wouldn't hurt me, yet also wanting to please him. It made me unable to stand up to him. But he was also afraid of me. Rainer never wanted to sit close to me. He built up a wall between us. Yet how quickly the wall disappeared whwn we happened to start talking to each other.

So many faces, father, son, mother, all in one. One more question on the subject of love, of give and take. Rainer had an enormous capacity for love, although, it was often combined with demands, like the example of the little finger: first it's just the little finger, then the whole hand. If you failed to set limits, you were lost. At least, I was. I needed to get away whenever things got beyond me. Yet to him that was the point when the relationship became interesting. He was greatly interested in disengagement and how to play with it.
