The concept of socially oriented economic action leads naturally to that of embeddedness of the economy. The latter was pioneered by Karl Polanyi in his efforts to demonstrate that markets were neither natural creations nor omnipresent. 16 Polanyi emphasized, in addition, that there were forms other than markets to organize the economy, including reciprocity and redistribution.
