Somewhere not far off he heard water splash and the sound of an animal as it drank. Lifting himself cautiously to one elbow, he peered through the branches toward the water’s edge. A great black bulk showed there, and he waited, half-frightened. Then the big head lifted, drops trickled from its muzzle, and he saw it was a bull buffalo, and a large one.
