Often, a problem that arises is that large databases are searched for very few facts that will give the desired information. Moreover, the algorithm and search criteria used in a single database may change when a new trend or pattern is to be studied. Also, each database may need a different search criterion as well as new algorithms that can adapt to the conditions and problems of the new data. More often than not, humans find it difficult to understand and visualize large data sets. Furthermore, as Fayyad and Stolorz (1997) described, data can grow in two dimensions defined as the number of fields and the number of cases for each one of these fields.
When this is not possible due to the small size of the total data set, a situation not likely to occur in data mining, various re-sampling techniques such as cross-validation and boot-strapping are used to obtain the predictive accuracy [Weiss and Kulikowski, 1991]. " This is a difficult question to answer. All that can be said is that there is no universally best methodology. Each specific application has its own unique characteristics that must be carefully considered and matched with different methodologies to determine the best method for that specific application.
