These suggestions change in regular time intervals according to real-time traffic conditions and do not require particular infrastructure for collection and dissemination of the relevant information. Our approach stems from the simple observation that the only reliable witness of the traffic conditions that lay ahead are the cars that are there now, or have been there recently. We attempt to exploit this by creating a virtual distributed network of intercommunicating agent nodes that pass along information (messages) that is enough for drawing conclusions on local traffic conditions.
The system called ECTL-Monitor (Electronic Commerce Transport Logistics) was developed in cooperation with a large company sending more than 10 million shipments per year. The main idea of the concept is to leave d a t a of the transport process on the forwarders' computer systems and to access these remote system when necessary. On d e m a n d software agents collect status information of all forwarders involved in the transportation chain, which very often includes up to four different logistics service companies.
