The study conducted by Latour and Shabou took place in an intellectual environment that had been influenced by the Ivory Coast expert Marc Augé. Since 1965 Augé had undertaken ethnological field trips in Ivory Coast, focusing particularly on the Alladian peoples, at that time numbering around ten thousand persons, who lived on the edge of a large lagoon to the west of Abidjan. Until 1970 Augé was the director of ORSTOM in Abi- Exegesis and Ethnology 21 djan, after which he took up a position at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris.

They had become acquainted at the first annual meeting of the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), founded by Robert K. Merton, in November 1976. At Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where the conference took place, the two young scholars had given presentations on the problems involved in the sociological analysis of scientific discourse. Latour spoke about citation counting as an important element in studying the “system of actions” of scientific papers, and Woolgar talked about the problems and possibilities of sociolog ical analyses of scientific accounts.
