Worse, this persistence of the old ways was beginning to impact on the new generation. 63 This meant that only a quarter of newlyweds could find a home of their own—leading to the well-documented phenomenon in the GDR of young newlyweds continuing to live either together with the family of one of the partners, or not living together at all, but remaining in their childhood homes. A new generation of East Germans was unable to begin a new life outside the world of their parents, which was a world older than the GDR.

In the case of both the memoirs and the interviews, a narrative emerges of Marzahners’ lives, but it is a choppy, broken narrative, defined by specific points of rupture—usually 1945, followed by whatever year they moved to Marzahn (which often became “year one” of the new era of their lives), and then 1989, in which everything changed all over again.  all these personae of one person or family and, for that matter, of the nation can be found assembled in photo albums or artfully rendered in vignettes of the century.
